2020.09.26 09:19 Skye_Panda10 First PC Build, wanting to use In Win A1 Plus Pink Mini ITX Case

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Extra info or particulars: Don't need anything huge and expensive, cheaper the better as long as it will run my games and programs

2020.09.09 06:52 C-Star August Update - What felt like starting every game ever

I feel like August was a “tale of two months” in that the beginning of the month and the end of the month being very different. Early in the month, me playing Trails from Zero on my crappy laptop in my backyard in the evenings, and eventually even playing Ys 4. Then at the end of the month, me being so unsure of what I wanted to play that I started a ton of stuff. Ive been itching for a Fire Emblem like game and even backed a Kickstarter for a Fire Emblem like game (and I havent figured out if the kickstarter created the itch or if I ended up backing the game because I had an itch) and that led me to buy and start Banner of the Maid, Nexomon had good buzz and I jumped into that for some reason, and then I honelty think that both those games are difficult and grindy in a way that led me to being interested in a pure action game like Luna Nights. Either way, I don’t really have any other games on the horizon until the end of October so Im hoping to finish all these at some point.

Legend of Heroes: Trails From Zero - PC (Purchased March 2020) [Complete]
The 4th game in the Trails series, the first in the “Crossbell Duilogy” and technically 1 of 2 games never released in english. Earlier this year a really good fan translation was released. I really enjoyed this game, its a lot smaller in scope in regards to the plot which is nice, getting away from the giant world ending events of Cold Steel 3 and even Sky 2 really. The characters were great and while I am playing in reverse order really, this game gave me a lot of context and appreciation for the events of Cold Steel 3 that take place in Crossbell. This might have become my second favourite in the series just behind the 1st Sky game.
Ys IV: Memories of Celceta - PlayStation 4 (Purchased August 2020) [Complete]
I picked up the PS4 version of this when it was released and was real happy to, the upgrade to 60 fps really made this game feel great. Like the other Ys games this was a really good action RPG and the moment to moment gameplay was fun, running around filling out the map was cool. My biggest problem with this game is the boss fights, for an Ys game there just isn't enough of them and what they have aren't anything special, all culminating in a very underwhelming final boss.
Banner of the Maid - Nintendo Switch (Purchased August 2020) [Started]
A strategy RPG that takes place in an alternate universe france during the french revolution. This game is very Fire Emblem including down to levelling up and hoping for a good level up. The game is hard, but very reminiscent of the GBA Fire Emblem games (without the perma death thankfully). I am about halfway and am enjoying it.
Spiritfarer - PC (Game Pass) [Started]
This is a very cozy management sim, that I played for about 20 hours and then lost my save to sadly. Everything about this game is great, the handdrawn art style to the relaxing gameplay and the heartbreaking but well written characters. I loved my time with it and even though I didnt finish it, it will most likely be on my top 10 this year,
Tell Me Why - PC (Game Pass) [Started]
The newest game from Dontnod, and at the time of writing this I have finished 2 out of the 3 episodes. I really like the story so far, its not complicated but feels like it has a lot going on. The main characters are great and ultimately I am excited for where this is going. This game is doing a lot for me that Life is Strange 2 didnt. I feel like Dontnod does its best when they are making smaller stories, Life is Strange’s week, or the few days of Before the Storm is ultimately better than the West coast, year llong adventure of LiS2, and this is falling into the smaller story bucket and I think its great.
Nexomon Extinction - Nintendo Switch (Purchased August 2020) [Started]
This is an unapologetic Pokemon clone, but a damn good one. This does what a lot of Monster catching RPGs don’t and that is make good looking monsters.That is this games stong point, a lot of the art is fantastic, pretty much all the graphics outside of the overworld are fantastic, but the overworld feels cheap in a mobile game way (and with the roots of this series its not shocking). The story is good, the writing is self aware and funny. My only issue with this game really is that it is incredibly grindy in what is my opinion a bad way.
Aokana: Four Rhythms Across the Blue - Nintendo Switch (Purchased August 2020) [Started]
This is a visual novel, that focuses on a world that has anti grav shoes and basically the ability to fly, and a sport revolving around that, I saw the anime a few years ago, really enjoyed it despite it technically being bad (trying to adapt a long visual novel to 12 20 minute episodes just never works) but there wasn't an english version at the time, I forgot about it until the preorder for the physical version was announced and got excited. Im still early but i'm enjoying it.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 - PlayStation 4 (Purchased September 2020) [Started]
This is just those first two games, they play how you remember them playing and they look great, the soundtrack is good, but a little short. The game is good there really isnt much more to say about it. (Im bad at it)
Touhou Luna Nights - PC (Game Pass) [Complete]
This is a Metroidvania in the Touhou series, which is usually a bullet hell series (although I think there is a spin off in just about every genre at this point.). It keeps alot of the bullet hell influence, as your character throws knives in this game, and are able to recover HP and MP by “grazing” enemies. There is also a mechanic of being able to stop time and the ability is tied to a meter, which makes both traversal and combat interesting. I really enjoyed this game, even if the bosses were pretty hard and could even be frustrating at times. (Without going into details, anything bullet hell inspiried can be difficult for me as I have some vision issues). I think this game (and Gato Roboto from earlier this year) have made me come to the fact that I like Metroidvania’s more than I thought I did. And im not even really gonna mention the 20 minutes or so of Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Wasteland 3 and Forza Horizon 4 I played

Karak sat down to do an impressions video for Crusader Kings 3 but it sort of became a review.
Kotaku - Luke Plunkett - Unscored
It’s a game of endless freedom but also constant moral quandaries. Where you’re challenged as a parent as often as you are on the battlefield. Where you can pay tribute to Popes while torturing the innocent in your dungeons. Where you’re constantly bombarded with choices and decisions, and every single one of them means something... Crusader Kings III may begin in what we used to call the Dark Ages, but it’s a Renaissance for strategy gaming in 2020.
[Waypoint Vice]() - [Gita Jackson]() - Unscored
It's a testament to the game's success that it is so startling to have the illusion of its reality shattered. There are some parts of human behavior that you simply can't reduce into a math equation or series of "if, then" statements. What Crusader Kings III does comes very, very close, so much so that I stayed up all night playing it twice in the same week. It is so easy to slip into your world, lording over a few counties, totally engrossed in the minute dramas of your court. But the real marvel is when you scroll out to see the whole world, and you see how much of it has developed without you.
Entertainium - Gareth Brading - Unscored
Crusader Kings III is one of those “just five more minutes” games, which hooks you in with various short term objectives and before you know it several hours have gone by. As King Malcolm, I was determined to force the Earl of Northumbria to accept my terms for peace in his aggressive war to capture Cumbria from me. Sadly, Malcolm was slain in battle outside Carlisle in 1072 (a full 20 years before he was “supposed” to die) leaving young Prince Duncan (age 12) to be the new King. Whether the young king’s reign will be as great as his father is a story for another time. Crusader Kings III is full to the brim with these stories, and each time you play a new character you can construct a new saga. It truly brings history to life in a way few other games have achieved.
Rock Paper Shotgun - Nate Crowley - Unscored
There are so many more little good things about Crusader Kings 3 that I’d like to talk about. So many strange little intricacies, and delightful, unexpected moments of satisfaction, of the kind CK2 delivered so well. And that’s the thing. Because if this game came out of nowhere, with nothing like it having graced the PC before, I would be speechless at its ingenuity. But of course, Crusader Kings 2 has been gracing our PCs, for eight years now, and it’s a bloody hard act to follow (you have to realise just how hard it is not to swerve into a concluding metaphor about royal succession here. Rest assured, I’m not going to do it).
IGN - T.J. Hafer - 10 / 10
Crusader Kings 3 is a superb strategy game, a great RPG, and a master class in how to take the best parts of existing systems and make them deeper and better. I have thousands of hours in the previous game, and I expect to spend at least that many in this third installment. All of the engrossingly flawed characters and stories of love, war, triumph, and loss that have already dynamically emerged from my playthroughs feel like just the beginning of something legendary. In fact, if I had to pick only one game to play for the rest of my life, the decision wouldn’t be that difficult. A new king of historical strategy has been crowned. Long live the king.
GameSpew - Robert Gammon - 10 / 10
Every detail of Crusader Kings III feels like the perfect evolution of the series. The refined systems and better UI don’t take away from the complexities of a campaign; they just make it easier to have fun. Every worry I had of this being a watered-down Crusader Kings II experience faded away with the sheer amount of content available. With a larger world, more refined systems, gorgeous visuals and deep character mechanics, Crusader Kings III is everything fans of the series could have hoped for – and more.
Thumb Culture - Steven Strom & Stuart Nightingale - 10 / 10 - Platinum Thumb Award
... You can easily sink hours into it without realising you had, which is fantastic to get that feeling out of a game. For fans of RPG, simulation, strategy games and previous Crusader Kings titles, this is a must-have. I have already seen people crying over on Reddit on how much they want the game to drop already. Bonus for Crusader Kings 3 fans who have Xbox GamePass for PC that’s available on day one too.
Saving Content - Scott Ellison II - 5 / 5
Crusader Kings III is all about the dynasty you’ve built, and the legacy you leave behind for a future of fame, fortune, and family in an ever-unfolding drama that’s brought unto you, or what you create for yourself. There’s a chasm-wide cast of characters to play as from real royal families from hundreds of countries, many of which you’ll want to see them through. Whether a new or returning player, hours will pass like minutes, and you’ll realize the game has a hook on you that you won’t want to remove. This is grand strategy at its finest, and Crusader Kings III is an immensely replayable, unscripted narrative masterpiece.
VG247 - Lauren Aitken - 5 / 5
All in, Crusader Kings 3 is my Game of the Year so far. If you’re looking for a new strategy title with some RPG flair that will suck you in for 500 hours or more during this endless lockdown, then it should be on your wishlist already. Better still, future support is already assured – there’s one expansion already in the works plus a few flavour packs coming soon if the huge base game isn’t enough for you.
Twinfinite - Giuseppe Nelva - 5 / 5
Hundreds upon hundreds of characters live their lives on the map. They struggle for survival, they murder, they cheat, they make love, they give birth, they conquer and are conquered, they rise to glory of fall into misery, exactly like you. Not only Crusader Kings 3 is one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played, but it’s also one of the best world simulators I can think of. It’s basically the Sims without the gibberish and with swords, on a much, much grander scale.
StrategyGamer - Timothy Borsilli - 5 / 5
Despite these few grievances, Crusader Kings III is undoubtedly one of – if not the – best strategy releases of the past few years. By building on the Game of Thrones-style drama and intrigue that its predecessor excelled at, it makes for engrossing gameplay that combines the best of the grand strategy and RPG genres. With Paradox pushing hard to make CK3 much more accessible to an unfamiliar mainstream audience, there has never been a better time to take a leap and see why this series has inspired such a dedicated fanbase. While it may not yet have all the bells and whistles of its predecessor, this is possibly the most polished a mainline Paradox title has ever been at launch.
Game Debate - Stuart Thomas - 9.5 / 10
I might have mentioned that Crusader Kings 2 was one of my favorite games. All I really want out of a game - any game - is to lose myself in a good story. Crusader Kings gives me that, fresh, every time I sit down to play. Crusader Kings 3 is at the start of its own story - I'm estimating we're going to see around 300 DLCs for this beast before it's all said and done - and already through its clarity of interface and intelligent design decisions I can see years of amazing "OH MY GOD, you'll never guess what happened in CK3" moments clogging up Felix's email inbox as I continue on my own journey with this wonderful, wonderful game.
PC Gamer - Fraser Brown - 94 / 100
It's an irrepressible story engine that spits out a constant stream of compelling alt-histories, delightfully infuriating characters and social puzzles that I've become obsessed with unravelling. I can't imagine being done with it. I just subsist on digital drama now. Will Alfred finally leave the torture chamber and make a friend? What's Bjorn going to do now that he knows his wife is in love with his chancellor? And who's going to be committing patricide next? I need to spend less time writing reviews and more time with my dynasties.
COGconnected - Jake Hill - 92 / 100
It’s clear that Crusader Kings is not a game for everyone. It’s dense, complex, at times slow, at other times overwhelming. But there’s a magic here, a storytelling generator that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a series that already has a lot of fans, and I think those fans are going to agree with me when I declare Crusader Kings 3 the best Crusader Kings yet. There are also a lot of people who may become fans, and to them, I declare this game as easily the most accessible Crusader Kings. Not only is it a strange and wonderful experience, but it also promises to grow more exciting with future updates. You can’t get your Crusader Kings fix anywhere else, and Crusader Kings 3 takes the series to new heights.
IGN Italy - Claudio Chianese - 9.1 / 10 - Italian
Graphically beautiful, fun to play, intelligently designed, Crusader Kings III is one of the best entries in the long list of Paradox's grand strategy games.
GameWatcher - Bogdan Robert - 9 / 10
As much as it remains a numbers-driven grand strategy game, Crusader Kings III masterfully paints a complex medieval world teeming with living characters that have desires and ambitions. Its mixture of familiar and evolved systems enhances its roleplaying and emergent storytelling potential. The actions that you perform always feel like they’re the result of a process or skill your characters have naturally gained and there’s always something to grab your attention. And so it did, as for 70+ hours we were completely absorbed by warfare, realm management and court intrigue, which, it turns out, we haven’t had enough of just yet.
33bits - Euyen Esquefa Pons - 90 / 100 - Spanish
Crusader Kings III is not a revolution compared to the second installment. But it is a good evolution. Crusader Kings III is Paradox's masterpiece. It still has some flaws that already had the second part, and is possibly less complete, in content, than the second part with all the DLCs. But it can be said that CK3 vanilla is much more than CK2 vanilla. And the additions such as the house system, the new way of managing the baronies or the perks in the lifestyles are very good additions, in addition to a total visual redesign, with a friendly interface for the new player. Highly recommended. And more knowing that, even without the need to buy paid expansions, Paradox will maintain the game with regular updates.
CGMagazine - Preston Dozsa - 9 / 10
[Crusader Kings III is] a game that excels at creating a story that will captivate you regardless of what kind of story you want to tell. It will surprise you all too often in how each system interacts with each other and how your neighbours and family respond to your actions. House Forez’ trials and tribulations will stay with me for some time, and I hope that those who play this will create a dynasty that is as memorable for them as this one was for me.
God is a Geek - Mick Fraser - 9 / 10
Crusader Kings III is an excellent kingdom management game, more intimate but no less intricate than the likes of Civilisation VI, it’s as unforgiving a simulation as you’re going to find while still being more fun than you’d expect it to be. It’s not an easy game to get to grips with, and there are moments where you won’t be able to declare a war or prevent one and it won’t always be clear why – and there is an awful lot to read and understand – but Crusader Kings III is still arguably the best way to play out your Game of Thrones fantasies without actually harming your family members.
PCGamesN - Ian Boudreau - 9 / 10
Arriving as it does on the eve of what may be a succession crisis in the United States – that grand experiment in Enlightenment ideas of popular sovereignty – it’s tempting to think of Crusader Kings III as a kind of divine omen. Paradox’s latest incarnation of its medieval dynasty simulator is not only strangely portentous, but it’s also the most accessible the studio’s grand strategy games have ever been. Thanks to a near total rework of its interface, an enhanced new build of the underlying Clausewitz engine, and a generous new system for keeping players informed, Crusader Kings III is the new gold standard for the genre.
PC Invasion - Jason Rodriguez - 9 / 10
While Crusader Kings III has shortcomings and flaws, these are overshadowed by the sheer number of options and content thanks to its gigantic map and features. Greater emphasis is placed on a character's or dynasty's growth, a level of detail not seen in any previous grand strategy title, allowing you to experience trials and tribulations like never before.
Spiel Times - Ishan Day - 9 / 10
My dream of liberating Bharata remained after all… a dream. From a growing empire at the zenith of its power to a small dutchy, grappling with the burden of post-war recession, the splinter states warring among themselves. It was not game over but I gave up. Feeling bouts of rage and disappointment and a strange eagerness to try something different, I promised to return one day. I was yet to explore Africa, East Asia and the Middle East. I felt determined, but I was not sad. This parting was only temporary. It is this unpredictability that makes it such a great and terrible game at the same time. Nevertheless, Crusader Kings III, with the sheer amount of content, will give you the most bang for your bucks. And if you are a challenge-loving bloke, you will love it and you will keep coming back for more because as I said before, it never gets boring. The replayability itself is worth paying for.
TheSixthAxis - Stefan L. - 9 / 10
The best way to think of Crusader Kings 3 as a sequel is in terms of its own dynastic gameplay. Sure, Paradox have started from scratch with a new game, but it's still full of scheming, warring amidst an impressive breadth of cultures and religions. Crusader Kings 3 is an heir that has been born from Crusader Kings 2 and its many expansions, including and improving on so much of what made that game great, but it can still grow and improve in its own right.
Shacknews - TJ Denzer - 9 / 10
It truly is incredible how much Paradox Interactive improved upon not only how the player engages with the world, but also how the world itself is a living, breathing place beyond your actions and whims, full of characters trying to achieve their own goals. Every story, even with the same ruler, has the potential to play out vastly different, and your narrative will likely be unique from mine. All things considered, Crusader Kings 3 is perhaps one of the most immersive and flexible strategy games ever put together.
Wccftech - Nathan Birch - 9 / 10
Crusader Kings III pulls off a difficult dual victory, bringing a new level of depth, charm, and polish to the franchise, while also making it far more approachable than before. Some aspects of Crusader Kings III still aren’t as user-friendly as they could be, but overall, this is a worthy heir to the throne.
GameSkinny - Jordan Baranowski - 9 / 10
If you've always been intrigued by the idea of Crusader Kings but bounced off of it, Crusader Kings 3 is the best way to get started. It looks and feels great, and it already has a ton of available content at launch. DLC will indeed run thick, but it doesn't feel like the base game is missing aspects out of the gate. At the same time, CK3 is great for veterans. A lot of fan-favorite elements that were added to CK2 over a decade of DLC are already here, and most of the systems are close enough to the same family tree that you shouldn't have trouble taking kingdoms over.
Spaziogames - Daniele Spelta - 9 / 10
Without many words, Crusader Kings III is one of the best Paradox Interactive grand strategy games to date.
The Games Machine - Daniele Dolce - 8.8 / 10 - Italian
Crusader Kings III is one of the best Paradox Develpment Studio's games to date. Deep and compelling, this grand strategy can entertain you for dozens, if not hundreds of hours between its intrigues, holy wars, and dynasties in the making.
Game Revolution - Jason Faulkner - 4.5 / 5 - Editor's Choice
This review only skims a bit of what the game offers, as it’s incredibly complex. However, I feel like CK3 introduces its various systems in a much easier-to-grasp way than CK2 did. So, if you’ve been intimidated about Paradox’s grand strategy games, CK3 makes a new beginning that continues to provide all the fun of medieval intrigue, drama, and history, while making it a lot easier to pick up and play.
Attack of the Fanboy - Brandon Adams - 4.5 / 5
I’ve never been the biggest fan of grand strategy games, yet I can’t put the it down. Crusader Kings III’s near perfect marriage of robust grand strategy with compelling roleplaying means both fans of wargames and storytelling aficionados will find something to love in its medieval world of politics and intrigue, whether that’s crunching numbers to efficiently conquer the known world, or rolling with the punches as they scheme their way into the annals of history.
TrustedReviews - Ryan Jones - 4.5 / 5
Crusader Kings 3 is a fantastic new entry to the history-rooted strategy series, putting a larger emphasis on character-driven narratives and opening up more entertaining opportunities for increasing the size of your kingdom. A huge number of quality-of-life improvements makes menu navigation significantly easier, while new in-game guides and tutorials makes it far more friendly for newcomers to learn the basics. It’s also a lot better to look at with 3D character models and more detailed maps ensuring a more immersive experience. Technical issues and unreliable AI-controlled allied troops prevent Crusader Kings 3 from a perfect score, but this is undoubtedly the best entry to the series yet and will only likely get better with the guaranteed expansions.
Gameliner - Dionne Lips - 4 / 5 - Dutch
Although Crusader Kings III is quite complex and it is certainly not suitable for the casual gamer, it is a strong game in the real time strategy genre. Fortunately, Crusader Kings III is a lot more accessible and easier to play than its predecessors due to the many added tools. Although it is sometimes still difficult to figure out exactly what to do. The different levels of difficulty and the fact that you can determine yourself at what pace the game takes place, come in handy in any case. Players can immerse themselves better in Crusader Kings III as the characters, traits, skills and lifestyle make everything more personal. So if you have quite a few hours left to spare and have a soft spot for strategy games, then Crusader Kings III is an excellent choice.
GameSpot - David Wildgoose - 8 / 10
In a sense, Crusader Kings 3 is all over the place. It doesn't always work perfectly, and at times it really makes you work for it, but there's something amazing in that any of it works at all. Strategy games can tell interesting stories as their empires rise and fall, but their procedural narratives are rarely as affecting and poignant as they are here.
IGN Spain - Álex Pareja - 8 / 10 - Spanish
Crusader Kings III is the new noble management's king. Every little piece matters on the board, impressive and huge, but merciless with the newbie.

2020.08.28 14:18 PatrirachZell [Recommendations] Different kinds of cheat elements in Webnovels

Hello fellow Daoists, I am back with a list of recommendations for you webnovel lovers. Having a cheat element in a webnovel is on at least 70% of the webnovels out there.
Find a random webnovel in this vast continent of Webnovel and flip 10 chapters and you might find exactly a cheat variable that turns our MC overpowered compared to the citizen of their world.
Let me share my library of cheating webnovels hehe. Hope you find something that suits your tastes. Enjoy!

====
[CN] Hail the King (1275/1275) [Completely Translated] [Xuanhuan, unique world system, Video Games*, grinding]
Short summary: The protagonist will transmigrate to a xuanhuan world with a unique cultivation ranking, but what makes it interesting is that he further get transported to another world that is extremely similar to diablo 3, where everything he does there gets brought back into reality (the new world that he is in).
====

Short summary: This webnovel is similar to hail the king, that he gets transported into another reality where he gets to meet a group of “masters” in their profession and trains in a realistic manner, not a game. Which allows him to do real-life grind in a totally different world.
====
[CN] Pocket Hunting Dimension (340/1330) [On-going Translation] [Sci-Fi, Star realms, special abilities, cosmos]
Short summary: Our protagonist is able to live in a realistic “dream” that only consists of monsters and “energy/skill drops”, which he is able to bring over to the real world. This is quite a different webnovel as he actually reveals his energy drops to other people and shares them.
====
[CN] Bank of the universe (202/700 +) [On-going Translation and writings] [XuanHuan and cultivation]
[CN] Trafford Trading Club (V8/V15) [On-going Translations and writing] [Episodic, story, more like death parade]

Type: KR style abilities

[KR] Swordmaste Healer – (171/291) [Translation Halted] {Swordsman with healing abilities}
Overview: The webnovels mentioned are all dungeon styled, where one person only have 1 particular “awakened” ability. While the main character usually starts off in the lowest E-rank, and they will awaken or find out that the skills they possess is actually ridiculously broken.
The plot will be fast-paced dungeon clearing and ranking up to become the strongest on earth, while the rest of the people are still at their same rank or levels.
Type: Sci-fi World
[CN] Godly Model Creator – (1016/1089 [On-going Translation] [Sci-fi, Cultivation, Unique Abilities]

Slime: Army-building, plot progression

5.Talent/Mysterious Background
Generally, there are many CN webnovels out there that love to hide a mysterious background pertaining to either his past memories or his parents are extremely strong, most of the times the parents usually leave an op item with the protagonist, however, for this, we will talk about the talents of the protagonist because of his background.
The following webnovels mainly focus on the talents and not some “cheat item”:
Type – Mysterious Background:
[CN] Spirit Realm (1841/1841) [Completely Translated]
[CN] Martial God Asura (4000+/ 4779 + ) [On-going Translation and writing]
[CN] The Great Ruler (1560/1560) [Completely Translated]
[CN] Talisman Emperor (2166/2202) [On-going Translation]
[CN] Immortal God Emperor (1390/1390) [Completely Translated]
Overview: All the webnovels are set in a XuanHuan world, with the protagonist possessing the bloodline or talent because of their parents that they never knew was one of the strongest in the world.
Usually, they will have to cross multiple realms and encounter various plot, then starting to doubt themselves and finally realized that their parents are still alive. Or, was told by either the fathemother that their husband/wife is actually brought back to their ancestral clan because of the taboo of marrying him/her.
Most of their talents also spread to sub-profession, alchemist, blacksmiths, most likely it is a “rare and prestigious” profession in the particular xuan huan world.
Once the protagonist found out that their parents are actually alive and hidden somewhere in the world, the will do whatever they can to find them and eventually becomes the reason for plot progression.
If you like to read webnovels that has a plot that consists of occasional op helpers that is pseudo plot armor because of the MC’s background that he didn’t know and talents that allow the MC to progress faster than anyone else then leave the side characters every arc, try anyone of them.
====

[CN] The Wizard World (646/646) [Completely Translated]
[CN] Mechanical God Emperor (638/1569) [On-going Translations] [Abit of Artifact crafting, but that is it, still the same as the rest]

Finally, an A.I chip that helps to do computations, provide solutions, and store memories. Oh and it is usually brought over from the other world when they transmigrate.

[CN] Rebirth of the Legendary Guardian (856/856) [Completely Translated] [MC is a horndog*]
[CN] Sword Among us (767/1270) [On-going Translations]
Overview: Surprisingly, most of the webnovels in the VRMMO genre is exactly the same, starts off with a betrayal from his lifelong company/studio/guild, then followed by transmigration back to the beginning of the game.
Then he will borrow money, get a gaming set, then abuse their “body movements from the future”, and use some skill that allows them to climb places they cannot climb and then obtain op equipment.
Next, he will either have ways to power level, earn money, start a guild, fight against the previous life betrayers.
P.S There will be usually a “noob” but loyal buddy, (usually a fatass) that helped him all the way in his previous life and the protagonist carries him in this life.
====
Type – VRMMO Transmigration
[CN] Night Ranger (735/735) [Completely Translated] [Eastern Fantasy, Unique Classes, No other players, Hidden Plot]
[CN] Advent of the Archmage (726/726) [Completely Translated] [Eastern Fantasy, Mages, Hidden Plot]
Overview: For both NR and AOTA, they have similar world-building, feels like eastern fantasy and they will slowly progress into saving the world, with many hidden plots gradually getting revealed on why they actually transmigrated. The levels system is very small though, so you will not see level grinding. More of an adventure story.
[CN] The Legendary Mechanic (952/1346 ++) [On-going Translation] [Sci-fi, User Become NPC, Real Players] {Becomes NPC that gives out quest while progressing, in an extremely technologically advanced world}
[CN] The Amber Sword (360/1457) [On-going Translation] [Eastern Fantasy, Swords and magic, Lots of POV, NPC world] {More on Aristocracy and talking than actual grinding}
[JP] Overlord (V14/V14) [Completely Translated] [Adventure, Multiple POV, OP Protagonist, Dark] {Probably the least amount of levels compared to the rest of the novels, but lots of Cunning situation and dark situation, well he is the lord of a tomb and OP from start}

[KR] The editor is the Novel’s Extra (45/211 +) [On-going translation and writing]
[KR] The novel’s Villain (47/249) [On-going Translation]
[KR] Omniscient Reader Viewpoint (551/551) [Completely Translated]
[KR] Trash of the count’s family (590/594+ ) [On-going Translation and writing] [Different from the rest, more on living peacefully than interacting with the plot, but on how he failed to live peacefully lol]
Overview: Although they have extremely similar names, they are written by different authors. However, as you can tell from the names, they are similar in the plot too. The protagonists are readers or writers of the novel, where they are suddenly transported to the novel’s world.
However, because they are devoted readers, they know almost everything about the plot, or at least until the part where they stopped writing. An extremely new take on the whole “memories of the world” kind of plot.
This gives the author new ways to write the story, for example, you will be able to know how the antagonists move and think because, well they know everything about the world. Or how the actual novel’s protagonist moves.
[JP] My Death Flags Show No Sign of Ending [116/116 + ] [On-going Translations and writing] {Transmigrated into a game, trying to survive as the king of trash, schemes, and plot}
====
Type – Xuan Huan
[CN] Sovereign of the Three Realms (2376/2376) [Completely Translated] [Multiple Realms, Alchemist, Adventure] {uses his knowledge of the best cultivation techniques and lots of abilities that he already knows to return back to the realm he came from}
[CN] Zhan Xian (430/1330) [On-going Translations] [Unique start, Multiple Realms] {He uses the abilities obtained as an immortal executioner when he dies to reincarnate with the best knowledge and talent to prevent walking down the same path again}
[CN] Tales of Demon and Gods (492/492) [Translation completed but story halted from author] [Unique World and cultivation techniques, Legends] {A unique cultivation world with a never seen before cultivation system, the protagonist returned back with hundreds of years worth of memories to speed up the cultivation of him and the friends around him to prevent the same tragedy}
[CN] Reverend Insanity (1893/2335) [Completely Translated] [Unique cultivation methods, small cultivation system, slow level-ups, lots of schemes, antihero protagonist] {Our protagonist roamed the world for hundreds of years and got transported back to the beginning, which he brought back with him the cruel experience of the world and his personality, really crazy mc.}
[CN] Alchemy Emperor of the Divine Dao (1439/4915) [On-going Translations] {The world’s best in alchemy trying to regain what he has lost after failing to ascend}
[CN] Transcending the Nine Heavens (1400/2750) [On-going Translations] [Multiple Realms, Power-skip, Politics, Plot] {This webnovel has a lot of Power spike, he goes back to the past to change a lot of things such as his cultivation foundation, or affecting the situation of various clans and families. The main factor of this webnovel is he uses his memories to help in politics and plot which is more than the action and cultivation}
Similar novels by the same author of (TTNH): I am supreme, realms in the firmament – his webnovels can be confusing, but will be understood if you read it all the way. Especially I am supreme.
====
Type – Teacher
[CN] Emperor’s Domination (3133/4084+) [On-going Translation and Writing] [Adventure, sects, Multiple realms] {Memories from teaching numerous pinnacle experts from their very beginning, millions of years of experience and finally able to use it on himself, more on abusing the memories to activate plot devices than cultivation}
[CN] Library of Heaven’s Path (2268/2268) [Completely Translated] [Unique profession, master of all, adventure] {A hidden library the grants the protagonist the knowledge of everything under the world in which he slowly uses them to train his ‘professions’ and disciples. More cultivation than Emperor’s domination}
====
Type – KR Dungeons and Towers
[KR] Master hunter K (183/183) [Completely Translated] [More to the betrayal than meets the eye]
[KR] Reincarnator (492/492) [Completely Translated]
[KR] Second Life Ranker (234/800) [On-going Translations] [Memory transfer from twin brother, still same type of plot]
[KR] A Returner’s magic should be special (179/314) [On-going Translations] [Weak MC, but OP analysis ability]
Overview: The protagonists of the webnovels were humanity’s last hope of defeating a tower climb or dungeon, they were the survivors of the whole population and was to the point of ‘clearing’ the tower. However, they still lost and both got sent back in time.
Which will then lead to them obtaining the most contribution for every level and abusing whatever they can to become as strong as possible.
Because of their memories, they are able to sacrifice most people while considering the bigger picture and groom a rare few ‘contestants’.

2. Spirit Advisor
[CN] Undefeated god of war (943/943) [Completely Translated] [Trainer trying to restore the legacy of his army]
[CN] Battle through the heavens (1648/1648) [Completely Translated] [Master trying to pass down his legacy while MC takes revenge for him]
[CN] Coiling dragon (806/806) [Completely Translated] [Eastern fantasy, with a grandpa teaching the protagonist step by step until he discovered more of the world and surpass him (sad part) ]
[CN] Nine Godheads (85/556) [Indefinite Hiatus] [Group of old foggys teaching the protagonist everything, cultivation, professions]
[CN] Painting of the Nine Immortals (1003/2868) [Translations Halted] [extremely similar to nine godheads, but he slowly awakens them one by one]
[JP] Sevens (343/343) [Completely Translated] [He gets to meet 7 of his ancestors, but it is set in a world with much more talking and conspiracies compared to action]
[CN] Against the Gods (176/1767 +) [On-going Translations and writing] [Spirit advisor more similar to a secret lover]
[CN] Martial God Asura (4389 / 4779) [On-going Translation and writings] [More of a companion in his long journey]
Overview: Spirit Advisors are one of the best plot devices IMO, it gives a plot-driving factor and provides training for the protagonist in a not so overly excessive manner. They do not get overpowered instantly and still goes through the process of training. But with less twists and turns and more guidance.

1.Systems
Honestly, though, systems are like the bread and butter of a transmigration webnovels, except for the typical xuanhuan cultivation webnovels, having a cheat with a system or game elements is considered normal. Here are some interesting webnovels with a system.
Type – Slice of Life
[CN] I’m Really a Super Star (1696/1696) [Webnovel banned in CN] [Showbiz]
[CN] Game Market 1983 (79/227) [Translations halted] [Programming, leveling system]

Type – Fanfictions
[CN] In Different World with a Naruto System (381/381) [Completely Translated] {Naruto World, wish fulfillment,}
[CN] God of Soul System (513/709) [On-going Translations] {One piece and bleach}
[CN] Long Live the Hokage (334/567) [On-going Translations] {49 years old MC (interesting twist), from the time of Hashirama and Madara, experiencing of generations}
[CN] Reincarnation Paradise (310/2689) [On-going Translations] {Anime Travelling}
====
Unique:
[CN] Neet receives a dating sim system (842/842) [Author Hiatus] [Modern world, hidden society, school life]
Short Summary: The world-building is great, a different kind of cultivator society slowly gets revealed as our MC have a mysterious background, but had to live a normal life because of his talents.
The system allows him to progress fast enough to let him overcome the various plot device to build up the cultivation world.
====
[CN] Monster Paradise (1418/1432+) [On-going Translations and writings] [Sci-fi, Pokemon-like, Unique world and cultivation system]

It provides almost all sorts of functions that will gradually get revealed. But the most interesting one is the capturing of monsters and summoning them.
====
[CN] Carefree Path of Dreams (1172/1181) [On-going Translations] {Multiple realms, pragmatic protagonist, xuan huan, no romance}
Short Summary: He starts off in farming, however, it is not a webnovel on farming, it later branches out to him traveling multiple worlds and being more focused on cultivation instead. Lots of unique world-building and side characters.
====
[KR] Solo Levelling (243/243) [Completely Translated] [Dungeons, Rankers, Unique ability, Country Politics]
Short Summary: Similar to The Gamer, the MC will receive a MMORPG system that is different from the rest of the unique abilities that are part of the world.
====
[CN] Shadow Hack (989/989) [Completely Translated] [Sci-fi, Futuristic, Multiple Realms]
Short Summary: Shadow Hack is a webnovel that is like playing an idle RPG, feels like the webnovel is writing the game into a webnovel. Similar style of cloning and then farming and multiply exponentially

2020.08.28 00:08 nokori321 100+ short reviews of short games #2

Welcome to 100+ short reviews of short games #2 – getting longer edition.
Since purchasing the bundle I’ve been steadily paging through it and playing as many short games as I can. I have now surpassed 200 (mostly) short games either substantially/fully completed or, for games without storylines/goals, I spent about a half hour with them. I decided to write a review for each game that I played, so here are the next batch of reviews. The first batch can be found here.
I've sorted them into groups (5/4 stars, 3 stars, 2 stars, 1/0 stars) and then sorted those groups into very broad categories to maybe help you narrow down the kind of thing you're interested in.
Disclaimer: The reviews reflect my own biases and preferences. Feel free to completely disagree with my opinions.
I’m pretty sure I’ve largely exhausted the sub-15-minutes games from the bundle, but there are still plenty more games that look to be on the relatively short (1-2 hour) side. So, as I haven’t gotten tired of playing and reviewing games yet, I’m going to keep at it for now. It'll likely be a longer wait until I'm ready to make the next post, though. No complaints here, but the end of lockdown means going back to work, which means a lot less free time to play games.

Reviews follow:

My top recommendations: Games I rated 5 or 4 stars (Games I really enjoyed or loved)
(no goals)
D.M.T. No objectives walking simulator. Wander through surreal, colorful dreamscapes with an electronic soundtrack that adjusts over time as you pick up ‘sound effect’ blocks. Spend a few minutes just looking for the portals to reach each of the 6 worlds, or spend a few hours admiring the trippy graphics and exploring every nook and cranny the game has to offer. There's nothing to collect or unlock, just walking through weird, hypnotic worlds that can be drenched in neon colors or pulsating patterns as desired using the effects blocks. Recommended for fans of aimless exploration and crazy visuals.
Islands: Non-Places Islands: Non-Places is an interactive art installation about finding the surreal in liminal non-destinations, the spaces that you pass through on your way to somewhere else. A bus station, a fountain in the middle of a square, the hallway vending machine, hotel lobbies. Clicking on the flashing lights will trigger imaginative animations. It takes between a half hour and one hour to complete. There's no real gameplay or story. It's all about the surreal visuals and soundscapes. Some are absurd, some are mildly anxiety-inducing, others are haunting and dreamlike. It's a fascinating world of haze, shadow, and lights where you can never predict exactly what the next click will bring. Recommended for: Anyone interested in games as art.
Shutter Stroll Shutter Stroll is a relaxing exploration game with a photography element. You can visit and explore small islands which are generated based on whatever eight numbers are input for coordinates. This means that anyone who puts in the same coordinates will see the same island. You can also visit the "Island of the Day," which uses the day's date (ex. 27-08-20-20) as the seed for generation. While you explore the island, use the game's camera function to take a picture documenting your visit. The camera function allows for adjusting zoom, depth, and applying some filters. The game has a fun community aspect with the "island of the day" and also promoting the hashtag #ShutterStroll in-game so fans can share and compare their favorite photos. A downside to the game is that it doesn't have a huge amount of variability in features, so if you visit multiple islands in a row you may start to feel some deja vu.
(levels/tasks to complete)
A Wish Upon a Star A casual puzzle game about a little girl who wants to be an astronaut. It takes about 1-3 hours to complete depending on whether you get stuck on some of the trickier levels or not. Each level is made up of a series of adjustable columns that need to be raised and lowered to provide a path for the girl from the starting point to the target. New twists to the gameplay are added the further you go, like sliders which move an entire row of columns back and forth, or levels where the goal is hidden beneath the ground and you need to carefully uncover it. No timers, no pressure, just solve at your own pace.
Four-Sided Fantasy A 1-2 hour puzzle game with platforming elements, where gameplay wraps around the edge of the screen. You control/swap two characters and use the screen wrapping mechanic to get them both past obstacles in the environment (e.g. moving character 1 past the left edge of the screen makes character 2 appear on the right side of the screen to avoid a barrier in the middle). As the game continues, the mechanics get changed up a little - swapping gravity orientation as well as character, shifting between foreground and background, or adding splitscreen effect between two separate locations that need to be correctly aligned to progress. The music is calming and the game incorporates relaxing natural sounds like wind, birdsong, rain, and crickets. The art is kept charmingly simple, with more emphasis on the backgrounds than the two little characters. The one thing missing from this game is a story. Even so, I still recommend this game because it's a relaxing and imaginative short puzzle game, the perfect sort of thing to play as a break from whatever else you have going on or to fill an empty hour.
GNOG A VR capable casual puzzle box game which takes about 2 hours to complete. The cheerful, colorful visuals will appeal to both adults and kids. The game is a collection of 9 puzzle boxes which need to be fiddled with to unlock whimsical music and animations. Each box has a different theme and unique puzzles to solve. The game gives no directions, but encourages fiddling with everything to learn how the puzzles operate and intuitively determine how to solve them. I’m a huge fan of the imaginative use of music, growing and changing as you get closer and closer to completing the puzzle, until the box bursts into triumphant song. Recommended for fans of unique, delightful visuals and light puzzles.
Hotel Paradise This quirky "hotel room finding simulator" imagines a bland-looking budget hotel interior where the illogical interconnected layout means you have to hunt around for your assigned room. In every playthrough the layout is different and you are deposited in a different location with only your numbered room key for reference. This means that some playthroughs will take little more than two minutes if you've been lucky enough to be placed near the assigned room, or up to a half hour if you need to cover every inch of the hotel. An eclectic combination of photos and art line the walls for you to admire and the bgm features some cool tunes like 80s-inspired tropical lounge-y jams. When you finally find your room, you are rewarded with your very own vaporwave neon paradise. If you like walking simulators and weird/silly games, this one is a good choice.
Luna A VR capable casual puzzle game that takes about one hour to complete, appropriate for children and adults. It has richly colored and patterned nature settings and beautiful soothing music. The background story to the game is a fable-like tale about a little bird who is convinced to eat a piece of the moon by a mysterious owl. This causes the bird to get blown away from its home and it has to complete a journey back, meeting other animals and restoring pieces of the moon along the way. The gameplay is simple and meditative with some easy puzzles and flowetree planting to restore the lands you visit. One thing that I wasn’t a fan of was the narrated story, which I didn't realize you can turn off until after I already finished the game. The voice over detracts from listening to the beautiful score, and the narration is very hand-holdy about what to do next. Come to find out, when the game was originally released there was no narrated story, it was an entirely visual/music-based experience. I guess a lot of people felt the storyline was too vague so they added a written narrative, complete with voiceover, on re-release? Personally, I think the game is much more magical without words. I wish there was an option on the title screen (like "play original mode / play storybook mode") rather than hiding it in the settings, so I would have experienced it as originally intended the first time around.
Magic Trick A cute game suitable for kids or for just anyone who is looking for some adorable no-pressure skateboarding fun with some collectibles and a couple of very small quests. Using their radical magic skateboarding tricks, Wizkid (you) can explore the small town, make new friends, collect trading cards, and learn how to make some magic graffiti to decorate the blank buildings. It takes place in a soft, cheerful world with rainbow colors and friendly animal characters. There's no pressure or scoring system, just fun skateboarding with sparkly, triumphant animation/audio effects for successfully pulling off or stringing together skateboard combos. Collecting the trading cards is a fun gameplay element that encourages you to figure out how to get to areas that at first appear inaccessible. A controller is recommended, but I didn't have any trouble playing with a keyboard.
Old Man’s Journey This game is about an old man who gets a letter and goes on a journey in response. The main draws are the beautiful artwork and also the evocative soundtrack by scntfc (who is perhaps better known for the music in Oxenfree). The minimal story itself takes a back seat. It features light puzzles that require shaping the landscape, moving the hilly terrain up and down so the old man has a connected path to travel on. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to complete fully and auto-saves after the completion of each cutscene. Recommended for people of all ages who like low-stress puzzles and hand-drawn artwork.
Vignettes Vignettes is a relaxing casual puzzle game that takes about 4 hours to 100% complete. The majority of the puzzles consist of rotating 3D objects until you land on the exact angle that matches/unlocks the silhouette of the next 3D object. You are helped along the way by a diagram giving you clues about how many new objects can be unlocked based on the object you're working with. The "secret" puzzles require a little bit more thought but don't ever rise to a truly difficult level, and reward you with fun animations that are cartoonish and whimsical. Background music changes as you transition to new objects and often echoes the themes of the objects themselves - the jeweled/kaleidoscope objects feature glittering chimes and the witch's house features dry bone-like rattling. This game was clearly designed to be played on a touch screen, but I had no issues using a mouse. Recommended for people of any age who want some casual, imaginative fun without serious challenges.
(Short narratives)
Karambola Karambola is a whimsical, surreal little short story about how a village of fruit/vegetable people use music, nature, and love to overcome their insecurities and fears. It takes 10-20 minutes to complete. The art is weird and beautiful; I love the detailed strangeness of the plant-head characters and the little clues in some of the background art about how to solve the puzzles. The music is fitting for each scene, a bit folksy sometimes. The puzzles aren't hard but reward attention to detail. It's a great small game that I recommend for anyone who likes surrealism, beautiful music, and unique illustrations.
Monster Pub (Chapter 1, Chapter 2, & Chapter 3) A cozy friend-making, card-game-playing episodic story. There are three episodes (each downloadable as separate games) and each takes about an hour to play through. In this game, you are the new monster in town and you end up at the monster pub, where you make some new friends. You can increase your relationship levels by chatting with the regulars and also by winning at cards. Raise the level high enough and you'll get a little bit of special dialogue at the end of chapter 3. The game has a cute cartoon pixel art style with fun, unique character designs for each individual monster. The regulars that you get to know all have their own backstories, interests, and personalities. The card game that you play with most of the characters is simple and easy to get the hang of, and actually turns out to be a fun challenge because the winning combos are different for each character. Recommended for people looking for a game that will give you some warm, fuzzy friendship feels or who likes playing card games.
(Text-focused games)
American Election A 1-2 hour interactive story about a young woman working on the presidential campaign to elect “Truman Glass,” a very thinly veiled fictionalization of Donald Trump. As the story continues, you get to witness and participate in the slow trainwreck that is her personal and professional life, set against the wider stage of the 2016 election. The story is very well-written, emotionally charged, and really gets you into the headspace of the main character. It’s tense, it’s unfair, it’s hopeless. It’s an excellently structured, evocative piece of fiction that deserves a high rating and that I have no desire to play again. Once was enough. Recommended for: anyone who feels like they’re emotionally up for a gut-puncher of a narrative.
Masks A twine-based interactive short story (around 5 minutes to finish) about protesting against an authoritarian government, not tied to any specific country or political movement but inspired by the Hong Kong student protests. This evocative game makes good use of twine mechanics in a way that I haven't seen done before in the other twine games I've played from the bundle. Things like countdown timers and graphical representations of air quality/noise meters create an increasing sense of tension. The scenery and emotions of the MC are very well conveyed despite the brevity of the work.
(Games with horror elements)
1,000 Heads Among the Trees A walking simulatoexploration game with light atmospheric horror elements, set in the real "witch city" of Cachiche, Peru. It can take anywhere from 1-3 hours to complete depending on whether you want to peer around every single corner or not. You play as a photographer visiting a small town in Peru known for its supernatural activity and supposed descent from witches. Gameplay consists of wandering the town and some nearby areas at night, taking pictures of the things you see, and then showing the pictures to the locals and other tourists you encounter to get their mostly-randomized reactions. The graphics are trippy in a rough, uncanny valley sort of way. The background soundscape features ambient night noises with eerie overtones. This game is absolutely not for everyone. Don't go into it expecting horror scares, an unfolding narrative, or even any explanations. It's a true walking simulator all about atmosphere over story (very minimal), puzzles (none), or goals (your character has a journal in which you write a to-do list as the game progresses, but it doesn't really serve a purpose and there's no reward for completing things). Recommended for walking simulator enthusiasts looking for a mildly creepy experience - Throughout the game you're followed by the sense of being an unwelcome outsider, tolerated only for the tourist dollars you bring with you and only so long as you don't pry too deeply into the town's secrets - and all you're doing right now is prying.
Midnight Manor This game tells the story of a man who takes refuge in a creepy mansion and begins to carry out a series of tasks for the gentleman he meets there. The gameplay involves jumping up and down the various levels of the mansion, stacking boxes to help you reach higher floors and collecting keys to unlock rooms. The game is designed with speedrunning in mind so there are no set paths through the mansion, and there are also some hidden/unmarked shortcuts between floors for you to discover which can help you plan your optimum route. A leisurely first playthrough can take about an hour, but practiced speedrunners can get 100% complete in around five minutes. The pixel art is simple but quality and the music gets steadily creepier as the game progresses. I especially enjoyed the sometimes-distorted track that plays in the basement. The game's page recommends playing with a controller, but I played with keyboard and experienced no difficulties or bugs. Recommended for: Speedrunners, people looking for a short horror story.
Sagebrush An exploration/walking sim game about searching for answers at a desolate cult compound. Learn about the dark secrets of the cult and why the player character was drawn here. It takes about 2 hours to play through. This isn't a true horror game, but there's plenty of horrifying details to uncover about life in the cult. The retro looking lo-fi graphics give an eerie distance to everything as the sun slowly sets during gameplay, backed by an atmospheric desert soundscape. Gameplay is a linear progression looking for keys and unlocking buildings, where you'll find the notes and recordings that reveal the story. Voice acting wasn't the best, it sounded like someone reading lines rather than recounting a lived experience. Even so, the game is great at building an unsettling atmosphere. The story (despite clichés) kept me engaged. I sort of guessed at the ending much earlier in the game, but the way that it actually played out led me to question a lot of what I'd just seen and experienced - how much of what I saw was really still there in the abandoned compound, how much of it was a product of MC's mind? Recommended for anyone who has ever found themselves feeling both horrified and intrigued when hearing about famous cults like Jonestown or the Branch Davidians.
(Point and Click)
Milkmaid of the Milky Way A charming, pixel art point and click adventure game about a milkmaid from rural Norway who gets drawn into a sci-fantasy conflict against an extraterrestrial despot. The game takes about 1-2 hours to complete and mostly consists of inventory challenge puzzles. The pixel art with rich backgrounds and the point-and-click style gave me the nostalgic feeling of playing LucasArts adventure games as a kid. The story is engaging and imaginative, with an interesting Indian-influenced culture for the alien visitors. I found almost all the inventory puzzles intuitive rather than illogical. I think I'm in the minority in that I personally wasn't a fan of the rhyming narration, I found it a little distracting, but it didn't interfere with how much I enjoyed the game as a whole and I still recommend it wholeheartedly for fans of fantastical speculative stories.
Panmorphia A point-and-click fantasy with beautiful graphics and lots of puzzles. It that takes between 2-4 hours to complete, depending on your familiarity with the genre and your puzzle-solving skills. In the game, you find yourself on an island and need to solve all the puzzles to unlock the island's magic and return home. While solving puzzles, you will undergo some magic transformations which will give you different views of the island and change what areas are accessible. Positive aspects of the game: A wide variety of point and click puzzles such as sliding blocks, rotating images, and codes to break based on patterns hidden elsewhere in the game. Beautiful graphics. Negative aspects of the game: inventory challenges aren't always logical or prompted, so it suffers a little from "try everything on everything until something works" that you often find in the point-and-click genre. But because every scene is so detailed and there's no visual indication that you're hovering over an interactable item, there's also a fair lot of "click absolutely everything just in case you can pick it up/use an item on it." Despite these drawbacks I still highly recommend this game for people who like point and click style puzzles which encourage attention to detail.
Winterlore This beautifully illustrated and eerie point and click story is based on Romanian folklore. It is "Chapter One" in the story of a young woman whose beloved grandmother has just passed away. It takes about one hour to play through. As directed by her grandmother's last message to her, the young woman completes a series of traditional handicrafts and puts them into the dowry chest by her bed. Throughout this process, interacting with items in the house slowly reveals pieces of a possibly supernatural mystery surrounding her family. The puzzles require some thought and attention but aren't too difficult, which I felt was the perfect level of challenge for a game like this which is more about the atmosphere and piecing together the story than it is about pure puzzle solving. Because this is only Chapter One, the story does not come to a firm conclusion and ends with more questions that it started with. Recommended for: People who like traditional fairy tales and folklore, beautiful artwork, and who don't mind ending on a bit of a cliffhanger.
(RPG/Adventure)
Ominous! Although this game primarily uses stock assets, if you like RPG maker games it's definitely worth checking out. Ominous! is a fully voiced fantasy/satire RPG featuring a profoundly stupid MC. Voice acting is mediocre but can be turned off. It takes about one hour for a single playthrough. It packs a surprising amount of replayability into its small size. There's a carnival with mini-games, an optional side quest, and a secret dungeon with a hidden boss that's only unlockable after multiple playthroughs. There are 4 endings and a lot of in-game achievements (called "Doom Tokens"), most of them based on finding all the myriad of ways to get the MC prematurely killed. But don't worry about having to restart, the game is told in flashback and he'll say "nah, that's not actually what happened" and let you pick up where you left off. If you want to 100% the game I can say it takes about 4 hours to get almost all the achievements, but the last two non-death-based Doom Tokens are hidden well enough that I still haven't found them.
(Platforming)
Celestial Hacker Girl Jessica In this 3D platformer you are a pink marble named Jessica. Roll and jump around the vaporwave-influenced, assemblage-style settings overcoming obstacles, unlocking areas, avoiding enemy lasers, discovering collectibles, and finding the cake to clear the levels. It will likely take about 2 hours for a first playthrough. Practiced speedrunning will take anywhere from 3 to 20 minutes, depending on if you use the warp zone to skip levels or not. The game is challenging but not punishingly so, leading to an overall fun experience where you can enjoy the feeling of accomplishment on completing a tricky maneuver or finally nabbing a difficult-to-reach collectible. All graphic assets are from Unity store, giving the final product a surreal pasted-together feel. Fitting with the name "Celestial hacker girl," a number of the levels/assets are cyberpunk influenced (like tron-influenced neon grid textures) or they are unabashedly girly, embracing magical girl aesthetics. There are plenty of electronic beats of various styles and even a vocaloid song as background music to add variety as you're rolling around. Besides the cool, weird visuals (what other game has a giant rainbow-static skeleton show up to poof you into non-existence when you fall into the abyss?), there are lots of collectibles - CDs with background music tracks to be played on demand, color reskins for Jessica, soda cans that unlock warp ability to each level - some of which require tricky moves or throwing yourself off the level to obtain. It took me around an extra 2 hours of gameplay to nearly 100% all collectibles (there's one soda can I haven't quite managed to get), but I admit I did use a guide to find a few of them. They're very well hidden!
Satan Loves Cake Satan Loves Cake is a relatively short metroidvania platformer starring an adorable chibi devil lord on a quest to pick up more cakes from the bakery. I really enjoyed how polished this game looks and feels, from the retro limited-color pixel art style and various chiptune bgm tracks to the responsive controls. The game includes the ability to toggle a speedrun timer and to save your game if you don't want to play it all in one sitting. A first playthrough is likely to take 1-2 hours - unless it turns out that you're as inept as I was at performing a "charge jump" (the game's version of double jumping), which added an extra hour to my playtime as I tried and failed to master the technique. The charge jump mechanic is my only issue with the game - the timing can be a bit tricky to get a solid handle on, but there's no location to practice the skill without risking death (leading to the repetitive retries). I still recommend the game for fans of platformers, metroidvanias, and retro style art.

2020.08.07 17:47 CaspianX2 Star Ocean First Departure R for Nintendo Switch - Review

Star Ocean First Departure R

Genre: Action-RPG
Players: 1
.
Review:
Originally simply titled Star Ocean, this Action-RPG was first released only in Japan on the Super Famicom in 1996 and would later flourish into a series. In the time since, Western audiences finally got a chance to play this game in its remake, Star Ocean First Departure, released on the PlayStation Portable in Western territories in 2008. This game takes the PlayStation Portable release, remasters the graphics, and finally brings it to consoles in a Western release.
However, despite that this is essentially a remake of a remake, Star Ocean First Departure R is decidedly a very old-fashioned throwback experience, combining some actually very nice-looking pixel art sprite-based graphics with some extremely archaic-looking polygonal graphics. If it wasn't for the improved resolution, you could easily believe that you're looking at a PlayStation One game here, and the game probably would have looked better if it simply stuck with the pixel art visuals. Also interspersed into the game are anime-style animated cutscenes, and these all look decent at least. This is all paired with a nice soundtrack and decent voice acting that does the best it can with what it's given.
On that note, this game's story is pretty poorly-told by today's standards. The characters all come off as pretty broad anime archetypes with writing that's not very good, although I will say at least the premise is fairly original, mixing fantasy and sci-fi elements. This story focuses on a group of friends on a medieval fantasy world whose quest for a cure to a local disease brings them face to face with spacefaring humans caught in an intergalactic war, joining forces to fight a greater foe.
There is one other area where the story is still somewhat innovative even by today's standards, and that is in how it branches based on your choices through the game, with a focus on the interpersonal relationships between the game's characters. This “dating sim”-esque element should provide some decent replay value for those who are interested in seeing more of the game's... well, otherwise mediocre story.
The gameplay here is also a bit rough, with the game not really conveying its mechanics to players and leaving them to figure it out. In short, players control only one character at a time, with allies automatically controlled by AI set to one of multiple strategies you can assign to them. Players can also swap the player they're controlling during battle, if they prefer. They also feel a bit unresponsive, with the game wrestling the player for control of the character and moving them where it wants you to be during battle.
In addition, there are some typical genre conventions that are apparently ignored in this game, such as every town having an inn and an item shop, clear directions for where to go, and even the default button layout during combat is just plain bizarre. These sorts of things don't necessarily kill the game, but without explanations it can make it a difficult game to get into, especially for newer players.
I actually wanted to like Star Ocean First Departure R a lot more than I did. The sprite-based graphics and music is charming, and I've actually been hankerin' for a good old-fashioned JRPG or classic Japanese-style Action-RPG. However, the bad story, and the confusing ways it bucks genre conventions without explaining things make it a hard game to love, even if there's definitely an appeal here for those who can roll with it long enough to get used to is quirks.
tl;dr – Star Ocean First Departure R is a remaster of a remake of the first game in the Action-RPG series, and with that comes graphics that straddle the line between quaint and archaic, and a story that just can't live up to modern-day standards. However, what's really holding it back is the confusing ways it chooses to do things differently than other games in the genre, without explaining how it all works, including combat where the game feels like it's fighting you for control over your own character. There's stuff to like here, but most will find a hard time getting into this game.

2020.07.30 15:58 Hunt_Master_95 A Few KFAD Character Ideas

Hey guys! I finished listening to most of the King For Another Day rips a few weeks ago, and I got inspired to come up with a few ideas for competitors if another tournament ever happens. Here's eight that I've made so far; a number of their source lists overlap with some existing ones already, so they might need to be tweaked a little. Enjoy!

Butz Klauser
Character(s): Bartz Klauser from Final Fantasy V (Dancer Outfit)
Bio: With ribbon equipped and tuxedo wide open, Butz Klauser is ready to tear up the dance floor. With his signature dance moves — the Mystery Waltz, the Jitterbug Duet, and, uh, twerking — along with rips from his flagship RPG series, he’ll be set to tango his way to the top of the tournament. Besides, with three princesses and a king as his comrades, maybe it’s time he got the royal treatment!
Sourcelist:

Mad Cuz Bad
Character(s): Madeline and Badeline from Celeste
Bio: At first, Madeline didn’t see the appeal on joining the King For Another Day Tournament; a crown seemed like an underwhelming prize, and a day dedicated entirely to her was pretty overkill. But with a push from Badeline, the more outgoing (and at times troublesome) Part of Her, she’s decided to give it a try. It couldn’t be harder than any C-Side, right? And who knows? Maybe once all of this is over, she could make a few new friends!
Sourcelist:
Ryu
Character(s): Ryu from Street Fighter: The Movie
Bio: The World Warrior is finally here, as portrayed by world-renowned actor and Maple Award nominee Byron Mann. While he can’t launch fireballs from his hands or travel yards with a single spinning kick without his crew behind him, he’s a self-proclaimed Tai Chi expert, and can rock a karate gi and headband like no one else. Still, there’s more power behind his punches than one would expect; underestimate this star, and he’ll make sure you see some more!
Sourcelist:

Rip and Care
Character(s): Doomguy from Doom and Isabelle from Animal Crossing
Bio: Isabelle and Doomguy are teaming up for King For Another Day! After a chance meeting at a GameStop last March, these two became fast friends, and decided to spend their few vacation days at this tournament together. They’re well-equipped for just about any fight, with Doomguy’s arsenal of gardening tools on hand and Isabelle’s journal on demonic anatomy and decapitation methods at her disposal. One thing’s for sure: you’d better respect this duo, or there’ll be hell — and bells — to pay.
Sourcelist:

Kratos
Character(s): Kratos from God of War (2018)
Bio: After destroying the Greek Pantheon and traveling across the Nine Realms, the God of War himself has arrived! Originally attending to impress his son and prove that he’s not past his prime, Kratos is now fighting to destroy the seemingly godly powers behind the tournament. With his Blades of Chaos and an abundance of terrible jokes at the ready, he’ll be sure to slay anyone in his wake.
Sourcelist:

Ryu Hayabusa
Character(s): Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden
Bio: Stepping into the ring is gaming’s original ninja and master of stealth himself, Ryu Hayabusa! Given that he hasn’t had his own game in almost 30 years, his views on proper video game difficulty are a bit dated, to say the least. Regardless, this early gaming icon is ready to show the other competitors what a real challenge looks like; bloated health bars and a bunch of slow projectiles have nothing on unfair enemy respawns, endless bottomless pits, and constant one-hit kill attacks. Rest assured, just like his games, he’ll be tough to beat.
Sourcelist:
Falco Lombardi
Character(s): Falco Lombardi from Super Smash Bros. Melee
Bio: From the hit party platformer Super Smash Bros. Melee, Falco Lombardi arrives on the scene! This space ace is constantly outshined by his brother in arms Fox McCloud on both the battlefield and Final Destination, so he’s come here to prove that he’s more than just a semi-clone. With his high-flying prowess in a cockpit and his even taller ego, he knows winning this tournament will be a cinch, so you’d better keep your hands off his crown.
Sourcelist:

Night of Lightning
Character(s): Takumi Fujiwara from Initial D and Lightning McQueen from Cars
Bio: Kachow! After giving up first place at the Piston Cup, Lightning McQueen is eager for another chance to take home the crown. But he can’t do it alone; luckily, he has the help of Takumi Fujiwara, one of the best drivers Japan has to offer. With McQueen’s racing experience and Takumi’s magic behind a wheel, this daredevil duo is ready to stand at the top.

2020.07.26 21:43 CaspianX2 August 2020 Noteworthy Releases on Switch

I occasionally see people respond to my weekly Upcoming Releases posts with comments like “it's just a buncha' shovelware”, and I don't think people realize the potential in some of the games they're dismissing. And especially with Nintendo stepping back from their regular Nintendo Directs, I think there's likely to be a fair number of Switch players asking themselves, “so now what?”
Because of this, before we jump into the next month, I'm going through the list of upcoming games for that month that we know about, and highlighting the ones that have a strong chance of being worth paying attention to, as well as a brief snippet about the game explaining why it's worth watching.
I will specifically only be highlighting games that have a reasonably strong pedigree, or that are otherwise particularly noteworthy in some way beyond “this looks good, it could be interesting...”. This means that I'll likely be mentioning a lot of ports, as it's easier to know a game will likely be good if it was already good on another platform (I'm including games that scored 75 or higher on Metacritic on other platforms, 80% positive or higher on Steam, and/or 4 or higher rating on Google Play store). I'll also mention games whose developer has a decent track record for producing quality.
Oh, and before getting into the games, I should note that this is just the list we have available right now – there are likely to be new games announced after this list comes out, as well as games on this list that get delayed. Also, I should note that this is not a list of the only games worth getting on the Switch this month – just the ones that I feel can be backed up with more than just “feels” given what we know now. And of course, since these games aren't released yet, I obviously can't know they're good, they just look promising.
Anyway, onto the list!
8/5 – Steam Tactics (Trailer) (No Metacritic score as of 9/1/20) – Steam Tactics was largely overlooked by critics when it was released on PC in 2017, but it has garnered an 86% positive rating on Steam from users. This is a turn-based strategy-RPG that its creator compares to Fire Emblem, albeit with a theme that has furry anthropomorphic animals fighting in steampunk-esque airships.
8/13 – Collar X Malice -Unlimited- (Trailer) (No Metacritic score as of 9/1/20) – The first Collar X Malice visual novel game got a Metacritic score of 79 when it was released on the Nintendo Switch earlier this year, and Unlimited is the game's direct sequel, which looks to explore new characters and events that took place during the first game, as well as exploring the events that took place after.
8/13 - Faeria (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 84) – I originally predicted this game in my June predictions list, but then it was delayed. However, what I wrote then is still worth repeating: Faeria released on the PC in 2017, and has an 81 score on Metacritic. This is a “living board card game”, and has been described as a cross between Hearthstone and Catan. If you've played either of those games, you know how tempting that can be...
Announced on 8/18/20: 8/18 - A Short Hike (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 88) – This game was shadow dropped on 8/18/20, so I had no way of predicting its release. However, as of this writing it does not yet have a Metacritic score, so I feel like I can still technically count this in my predictions. And given that the PC version of this game has a Metacritic score of 78 currently, it seems fairly likely that the Nintendo Switch version of the game will have a good score too, once it gets a score. This game is a short exploration-driven 3D adventure that some have likened to a much smaller-scale Breath of the Wild.
8/18 - Helheim Hassle (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 75) – This is a game I missed in my original predictions, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. This is a Puzzle-Platformer critics have praised for its clever puzzles and great sense of humor.
Announced on 8/18/20: 8/18 - Manifold Garden (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 78) – This game was shadow dropped on 8/18/20, so I had no way of predicting its release. However, as of this writing it does not yet have a Metacritic score, so I feel like I can still technically count this in my predictions. And given that the PC version of this game has a Metacritic score of 84 currently, it seems fairly likely that the Nintendo Switch version of the game will have a good score too, once it gets a score. This game is a first-person puzzle game in an M.C. Escher-like world, where players can alter the direction of gravity to solve puzzles. Critics have praised this game for its puzzle design and its mesmerizing aesthetic.
Announced on 8/18/20: 8/18 - Spiritfarer (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 89) – This game was shadow dropped on 8/18/20, so I had no way of predicting its release. However, as of this writing it does not yet have a Metacritic score, so I feel like I can still technically count this in my predictions. And given that the PC version of this game has a Metacritic score of 86 currently, it seems fairly likely that the Nintendo Switch version of the game will have a good score too, once it gets a score. This is a game that has been described as a cross between a platformer and a management sim, with critics praising its beautiful story elements touching on themes of death and saying goodbye.
Announced mid-August - 8/20 - Chinese Parents (Trailer) (No Metacritic score as of 8/28/20) – This game was released on Switch just a few days after its date was announced, however it does not have a Metacritic score yet so I'm still counting this as a prediction. This game was released in 2018 on PC. While it has yet to receive a score on Metacritic, Steam user reviews currently give this game a 91% approval rating with over 18,000 reviews. Originally released as a Chinese language-only game and later given a highly-praised English localization, this game is a resource management simulation of sorts that reviewers have praised as being an honest and loving look at both the strict but also caring nature of being raised in a Chinese family.
8/21 - Aokana - Four Rhythms Across the Blue (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 78) – I didn't initially include this one until it was pointed out to me by u/FerniWrites that this game was actually released on the PC last year (which I apparently missed), and a quick check reveals that, while it doesn't have enough reviews to have a score on Metacritic yet, over on Steam 98% of the over 1000 player reviews for this game are "overwhelmingly positive", which is pretty impressive. This game is a visual novel set in a world where everyone has access to shoes that allow them to fly, and players take the role of a coach of four girls participating in a mid-air race.
Announced mid-August - 8/21 - Even the Ocean (Trailer) (No Metacritic score as of 9/1/20) – This game was released in 2016 on PC. While it has yet to receive a score on Metacritic, Steam user reviews currently give this game a 83% approval rating with over 120 reviews. This is a puzzle-platformer with a unique approach to health management, as health is measured not in points but colors, and players must avoid their health bar being overtaken by any one color.
Announced mid-August - 8/21 - Inmost (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 75) – This game was released on Switch just a few days after its date was announced, however it does not have a Metacritic score yet so I'm still counting this as a prediction. This game was released on iOS in 2019, and the PC version of this game, which was released at roughly the same time as the Switch version, currently has a 92% user approval rating with 170 reviews. This is a platformeadventure game and critics that have reviewed it praise its stylistic visuals and story.
Announced mid-August - 8/21 - Paratopic (Trailer) (No Metacritic score as of 9/1/20) – This game was released in 2018 on PC. While it has yet to receive a score on Metacritic, Steam user reviews currently give this game a 83% approval rating with over 500 reviews. This is a short, retro-style low-poly first-person horror game that critics have praised for its disturbing imagery.
Announced mid-August - 8/25 - Over the Alps (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 9/1/20) – This game was released earlier this year on PC. While it has yet to receive a score on Metacritic, Steam user reviews currently give this game a 92% approval rating with over 70 reviews. This is a stylish WWII-era spy mystery adventure game. Critics who have reviewed it seem to be praising its good quality writing.
Announced mid-August - 8/26 - Jenny LeClue - Detectivu (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 9/1/20) – This game was released in 2019 on PC. While it has yet to receive a score on Metacritic, Steam user reviews currently give this game a 90% approval rating with over 200 reviews. This is a cartoony adventure game, and the reviewers that have commented on the game praise its puzzles and presentation but all agree that its characters are one of the big highlights of the game.
Announced on 8/17/20 - 8/26 - Jets'n'Guns 2 (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 9/1/20) – This game was released on PC earlier this year, and while there are not yet enough reviews for the game to have a score on Metacritic, the response on Steam has been overwhelmingly positive, with a 95% positive score after hundreds of reviews. This game is a classic-style Shmup with plenty of ship customization options.
8/27 - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 62) – The original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was a beloved GameCube classic, and this remaster looks to bring that classic game up to a more modern-day standard, although sadly without any sort of local multiplayer, I've heard. Hopefully this game will be just as engaging online as it was in couch co-op back in the day.
Announced on 8/18/20 - 8/27 - Hypnospace Outlaw (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 84) – Originally released on the PC in 2019, this game got a Metacritic score of 82. Critics praised it for perfectly encapsulating the internet of the 1990s in a mind-trippy simulation of sorts.
Announced on 8/22/20 - 8/27 - Tank Mechanic Simulator (Trailer) – While I tend to be leery of the majority of games on the Nintendo Switch with "Simulator" in the title, the PC version of this game currently sits at an 85% approval rating on Steam after getting over 3000 user reviews. This game is about, and you'll have to contain your shock here... cleaning and restoring old military tanks. Clearly a very small niche, but one that evidently this game serves well.
8/27 - Moon (Trailer) – Moon was originally released on the PlayStation alllll the way in 1997, and at the time it was heralded as one of the greatest PlayStation games of all time. So why haven't many of you heard of it? Well, it was never released outside of Japan. However, after over 20 years of waiting, the game is finally being brought to the West in the form of a port to Nintendo Switch. This game is an "anti-RPG" that plays with tropes of the genre.
8/28 - Windbound (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 66) – Developer 5 Lives Studio's one prior game, Satellite Reign, has a Metacritic score of 75, and Windbound visually looks stunning, with both an art style and gameplay that seems reminiscent of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, although this game's setup is that players have been shipwrecked on an island and are trying to explore and scrounge up supplies to survive.
August/September - Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition (Trailer) – While “August/September” is a bit vague, we can be hopeful that Sunless Skies sees a release sooner rather than later on the Switch. This is a follow-up to Sunless Sea, which released on the Switch earlier this year. However, it is generally agreed that Sunless Skies is much improved over its predecessor, with the 2019 release of the game on PC getting a Metacritic score of 87. This is a game that balances RPG and survival elements with a dark, almost Lovecraftian atmosphere in an alternate-world Victorian England swallowed up under the Earth.
.
Anyway, that's what I could find for August 2020 on the Switch. So, yeah, not gonna' sugarcoat it, unless we get some big announcements soon, it looks like we're in for a pretty slow month. Of course, I skipped mentioning multiple games by unknown and untested developers, so it's always possible we see something great come from one of them. Please feel free to give a shout out to any game you feel deserves attention! :-)

2020.07.25 12:11 VashxShanks All the Major Released JRPG Translation Projects Guide! [2018 to July 2020]

Another day another guide, here is one I have always wanted to do, but didn't have time for, a translation oatch guide for the big releases that happened in the past 2 years or so for JRPGs, also know that This isn't ALL of them, just the ones I found note worthy, and there is still more but I ran out of space, but please do post anyone you think should have been here. I hope you find this helpful.

Important Notes:

  • Each title will include links to the translation group site if avilable, and/or to the romhacking project page.
  • Each title will also include links to a youtube trailer or gameplay footage.
  • The descriptions are either taken from the project pages (romhacking), the translation group website, or are written by me in case they had no description in either websites.
  • The dates are for the patch release, and Not the game's release.
  • Credits to individuals from each translation team are either in the project pages, or the translation group website.
  • I would like to thank all the people involved in these translation projects, for their hard work and love for the community.

Translation Projects Released in 2018:

Asuncia: Matsue no Jubaku - PS1 - 09 January 2018.

Asuncia: Matsue no Jubaku is a role playing game for the PlayStation.
An odd sort of RPG, with a simple storyline. Its strategic elements involve fighting your way through a series of randomly generated maps. You earn a score by protecting towns, defeating dungeons, defeating monsters in specific combinations and such. Through the Story Mode, you unlock characters and levels for the quick battle mode.

Shin Seikoku: La Wares - SNES - 14 February 2018:

In this 1995 J-Force-developed, Yukata-published RPG you get a fairly unique mix of medieval fantasy combined with mecha armour. The game is an official adaptation of popular Japanese pen and paper RPG brand Wares Blade, featuring Golems (mechs) from an ancient civilization that can only be piloted by certain people and shape the entire concept of civilization and warfare. The combat takes place in a Dragon Quest/Phantasy Star first-person viewpoint, but it's divided into classic party combat in the dungeons and Golem combat in boss fights and over-world encounters.
The game starts with a plot by a shady bunch to revive one of the eight sacred Golems and the unlikely pair of main protagonists: The young bandit Chiffon and tomboy princess Michelda. You can sample the new English translation in the prologue below. If the characters and box artwork style look familiar, you are probably a Sailor Moon fan. No, those designs are not just inspired by Kazuko Tadano, those are her actual creations! She was part of the team working in the game and these certainly translate her style very well.

MegaMan Battle Network Operate Star Force - NDS - 22 February 2018:

Rockman EXE Operate Star Force was originally released for the Nintendo DS in Japan in 2009. It never saw a statewide release. It’s generally regarded as a low-effort port of the first Battle Network, but with a Star Force crossover scenario tacked on. Despite this reputation, the game still improves the first Battle Network in many ways such as various minor text, graphic, and balance changes throughout the game. The game also includes the new multi-player Star Colo mode.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails To Azure - PSP - 28 February 2018:

Eiyuu Densetsu: Ao no Kiseki is a turn-based role playing game for the PlayStation Portable and is the fifth entry in Falcom’s Kiseki franchise and the direct sequel to Zero no Kiseki.

Importnat Note:

The translation group The Geofront, who did "Trails from Zero", are working on translating this game too, Here is a link to their website page, and I am told their releases are of higher quality than this one, in case you want to wait.

Atelier Marie+Elie: The Alchemists of Salburg-Episodes 1 & 2 - PS2 - 18 March 2018:

A remaster of the two first titles in the Gust’s Atelier series, Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg, and Atelier Elie: The Alchemist of Salburg 2, which features redrawn and improved graphics, a reworked graphical interface, and redone mini-games.
In Atelier Marie, the worst student in the Academy, Marlone, is given a final chance by her teacher Ingrid to graduate by making a special item in a span of five years. Therefore, Marie will have to adventure throughout the lands surrounding Salburg to find ingredients to synthesize items, take requests from the local bar to make money, and make friends with the adventurers that will escort her through the monster-filled lands.
In Atelier Elie, a newly-enrolled student called Elfir must overcome the fact that she entered the Academy under special conditions by proving herself as a capable alchemist in the Contest the Academy holds once a year, while also looking for clues about the person who saved her life when she was about to die from the plague. In addition to traveling around Salburg, Elfir’s journeys in search of ingredients will take her to even more distant places, with even more items to find and more people to meet.

Digimon Adventure - PSP - 23 March 2018:

Digimon Adventure is a JRPG that follows the first season of the Digimon anime. A group of kids get caught up in a freak snowstorm, and are transported to the Digital World. There they meet some strange monsters named Digimon and try to find their way back to the real world.

G.O.D.: Mezameyo to Yobu Koe ga Kikoe - SNES - 01 April 2018:

The year is 1999. A boy named Gen lives together with his mother in a small Japanese city. One day he goes to the nearby mountains and discovers an underground cave. In this cave, he encounters a strange bat-like creature guarding what appears to be a huge diamond. When Gen approaches the diamond, the floor crumbles, and all he can see is a group of aliens descending on the Earth… Gen is awakened by a man in a military uniform. He quickly gets up, and notices a calendar. The year is 2009! Ten years have passed, of which there is no recollection in Gen’s memory. The world has changed a lot during those years. Aliens have invaded the Earth, many cities are destroyed, and he finds himself amidst the members of an underground resistance movement. Now he has to travel all over the world, help the humans in their struggle, and discover the secret of the invasion.
The game is a console-style RPG with randomly encountered enemies whom you fight in turn-based combat viewed from “over-the-shoulder” perspective, similar to Phantasy Star IV. Gen and other party members develop special powers called “chakra”, which can be leveled up just like the characters themselves.

Last Bible III - SNES - 12 April 2018:

The Last Bible series of games began on the Game Boy as a spinoff of the Megami Tensei franchise. Instead of the usual near-future apocalypse setting, Last Bible’s setting is closer to light medieval fantasy. Combat is turn-based, and retains the Megaten standard of being able to persuade enemies to join your team, as well as fusing them together to create stronger beasts.

Super Robot Taisen A Portable - PSP - 19 June 2018:

The story is independent from other entries, so the game can be played regardless of whether you have played Original Generation for instance. You will however play as either Axel or Lamia, whose stories are more fleshed out here than in the GBA entries. As is the tradition in Super Robot Wars, the story branches on some occasions to invite you to multiple playthroughs.
The game features a special “evasion erosion” mechanism, and enemies with a lot of evasion. This has made fans consider this game as one of the harder entries in the Super Robot Wars series.
Other game features include (skippable) battle animations with voices, in-battle and in-dialog save options, multiple spirits casting in a single action, multiple pilots for some of the bigger mechs.
This is actually a PlayStation Portable remake of the Game Boy Advance game with the same title (without “Portable”). Some of the features mentioned above were not present on its GBA counterpart, and the graphics are obviously higher res’ and re-done.

Super Famicom Wars - SNES - 21 July 2018:

The immediate ancestor to the beloved turn-based tactics game Advance Wars, Super Famicom Wars is a turn-based military strategy game developed by Intelligent Systems, published by Nintendo and first released on May 1 1998. It can be regarded as the direct successor to the original Famicom Wars, vastly improving on the original game while retaining its core ideas. The game was made available exclusively via the Nintendo Power re-writable cartridge system, making it one of the hardest Super Famicom titles to obtain today.
During the months prior to its Nintendo Power release several teasedemo versions of Super Famicom Wars were released on the Satellaview broadcast service, each featuring one map from the full game. Super Famicom Wars have later been re-released on Wii and Wii U as part of the Virtual Console library, again exclusively in Japan.
While most fans will agree that the series made huge improvements with each consecutive game at least up until the first Advance Wars title, Super Famicom Wars does offer a few unique features and enough original flavor to make it stand out as a great game in its own right.

Aretha - SNES - 03 September 2018:

In a far away land, war was raging, as an evil ruler sent his troops to invade the castle of a mighty king. His minions stormed the castle and burnt it down. The king could not escape his fate, and the villain thought no one was spared by his wrath...
Present time. You are Ariel, a little girl who lives with her old wise grandmother in a small house near a mountain range, north to the forest. She just turned ten, and the grandmother sends her on a seemingly simple quest: to go through the forest to Nineveh, the nearby town, and to meet there a certain person. But what starts as a simple assignment soon develops into the quest for magic powers of Aretha, the ultimate battle against the evil, and the discovery of Ariel's own true identity.
The game is a console-style RPG, where Ariel and her party travel on the world map, through forests, mountain paths, and caves, occasionally visiting towns and fighting monsters in turn-based combat viewed from first-person perspective, using a variety of physical and special attacks.
Important Note: The 2nd game, Aretha 2 was also translated and released by the same group, you can find the patch in the same gourp's website.

Super Robot Wars Gaiden: The Elemental Lords - Masoukishin - SNES - 04 September 2018:

Super Robot Wars Gaiden follows the original story of Masaki Andoh, herald of the Elemental Lord Cybuster, both before and after events of the original Super Robot Wars canon (SRW 2, 3, EX, 4.) It is the first Super Robot War to only contain original characters and plots, the first (and one of the few) to have its robots represented in a realistic, non-SD style, the first to be isometric. It and its followups are the only SRWs to feature directional and height modifiers to damage and accuracy calculations. Due to its nature as an original story, and due to it taking place at the very beginning of Masaki’s timeline, it serves as an excellent entry point into the Super Robot Wars series.

Laplace no Ma - SNES - 06 September 2018:

Laplace’s Demon is a horror RPG with a Lovecraftian bent. Set in the fictional town of Newcam, Massachusetts in 1924, the player and several paranormal investigators look into some disturbing rumors surrounding a mansion on the outskirts of town.

Tenshi no Uta: Shiroki Tsubasa no Inori - SNES - 14 October 2018:

Song of the Angel was a game released in 1994 by Telnet Japan and had many of the developers who would eventually form the famous ‘Wolf Team’ that brought us Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean! Many musical tracks were also done by the same composer too. Play the game, and the music and atmosphere will be very familiar to fans of the aforementioned games. Even though the game is rather obscure, its developers certainly are not!
The gameplay is the typical 1994 RPG battle engine, with a few additions. The most notable addition is the Parley system. This system allows you to parley with monsters using several languages in order to befriend or negotiate outcomes. Options include gaining gold, purchasing special items, gaining experience, raising friendship points, and more! There are day/night cycles that effect dialog as well as changing wares in certain shops. You will walk, teleport, sail on a boat, and fly on an ancient ark by the time your adventure concludes.
Tenshi No Uta is a love story at its core. A young man named Rayard meets a traveling circus performer and songstress named Callana. They fall in love early, but part ways due to Callana’s traveling lifestyle. After many days of misery, Rayard pulls himself together and sets out to tell Callana how he really feels. Thus, the real journey begins! This game has angels, demons, and even Satan himself! The story and writing are the stand-outs of this game. If you appreciate substance over style, you’ll enjoy this game for its charming core!

7th Dragon 2020-II - PSP - 22 October 2018:

7th Dragon 2020-II is a direct sequel to 7th Dragon 2020. Producer Rieko Kodama (Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia), composer Yuzo Kushiro (Streets of Rage, Etrian Odyssey) and character designer Shirow Miwa (Dogs, Kiznaiver) return, as does Hatsune Miku herself.
It is essentially a dungeon crawler in a world control by dragons, but of course it adds it's own twist to the formula. You get to create your own party members (gendeclass/ect...).

Shin Megami Tensei if... - SNES - 25 October 2018:

The third primary SNES Shin Megami Tensei title, if... is a bit of an odd duck. Gone are the sweeping stories of biblical conflict, gone are the branching stories based on your choices and alignment, though your alignment is still present. Instead, if tells the story of a disturbed teenager who makes a deal with a demon, and in doing so drags his school, his classmates, and his teachers into the Abyss, where they are subjected to various tortures modeled after the seven deadly sins. Instead of having path splits based on alignment, individual changes to your story are determined by which of four partners you recruit at the very beginning of the game, one of whom is only available on subsequent playthroughs. The more character-oriented plot and the high school setting almost makes this feel more like a Persona game (or a Devil Summoner game, if you discount the high school bits) than a mainstream SMT.
In fact, there are distinct parallels that can be drawn between if and the Persona games, especially the first one. The plots are somewhat similar, for one - the final dungeons in both games are essentially the creations of one of the main characters´ psyches. The female version of if...´s main character is canonically Tamaki Uchida, who shows up in Persona 1 as a student and in Persona 2 as a Devil Summoner employed by the Kuzunoha Detective Agency. And whenever the protagonist or partner characters die, they acquire a new "Guardian," a demon whose darkened image sits behind their portrait and that grants them spells and stat bonuses... sound familiar? Unlike personas however, Guardians cannot be freely swapped or fused; a character unfortunately needs to be killed in battle in order to receive a new Guardian.

Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis - SNES - 09 December 2018:

The 2nd game in the series, and it's like the first one, but just with more everything, and more focus on the story this time around, as for the story, will demons invade and you know the drill.
Of course just as the first game, this is a Fire Emblem like turn-based game, think Devil Survivor, but years before it, so its not far fetched to see this is the original Devil survivor game.

Ni no Kuni: Shikkoku no Madoushi - NDS - 09 December 2018:

The Original Ni Nu Kuni that came before the PS3 version, and while it ends earlier then where the PS3 version ends, it still has exclusive content to compensate, it has a unique turn-based battle system, a magic system that uses the styles and needs you to read through the magic book that was given with the game. The book was also translated of course.

.hack//LINK - PSP - 15 December 2018:

.hack//Link's story starts in a new version of “The World,” a popular series of MMORPGs known as The World: RX, and essntially it's a kind of a crossovefan-service action game rpg for all the different .hack games, you'll meet and join all the famouse and well known characters from the games in the series.

Translation Projects Released in 2019:

Linkle Liver Story - Sega Saturn - 02 January 2019:

This is an action RPG, though it's light on the RPG part, the gampelay is similar to Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but with some really good looking and smooth animations.

Medarot R - PS1 - 23 May 2019:

Medarot R is an RPG starring the characters of the Medabots franchise.
The battles take place on a separate field and they are turn-based. Each Medabot has separate health bars for the legs, arms and the head. Defeating a medabot is done by destroying the head part and each body part can have its own attack that players can use until the part has been destroyed. Up to 3 Medabots can take part in combat and some attacks have a limited ammo.
While sharing the characters from the Anime series, the story is loosely based on it and the story of the second Game Boy game. The game starts with Ikki waking up on his birthday to find a Medabot in his room - a present from his parents. Without a medal though, the Medabot is useless. After witnessing a customer at the store trying to sell his Medabot to the storekeeper, Ikki is engaged in a battle with the customer and receives a medal from the Phantom Renegade so he could confront the pesky salesman.
Players will gain experience to level up their medals, as well as win new parts for their Medabots after winning battles. Players can also spend money on parts if they want to.
A unique feature of the game is the Weather Forecast which is given by a Medabot and which offers hints on what would happen during the day. (Description taken from the Moby Games page)

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776- SNES - 31 May 2019:

It's The last Fire Emblem game to be made by the series original creator Shouzou Kaga, if you haven't played a Shouzou Kaga Fire Emblem game then you are missing out on what made the series so good to begin with, number wise it's the 5th FE game. It takes place between chapter 5 and 8 of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, and it attempts to improve on it while changing and adding new feature that since have become a stable of the series, also fun fact, Genealogy of the Holy War is considered by most fans to be one of the best FE games ever made.
While it doesn't have the gigantic maps that FE: Genealogy of the Holy War had with it's multi-castle capturing objectives, they are still big by today's standards and they traded in the extra size for more intricate map designs. It's the First FE game to have the Rescue system, which one unit basically takes another unit and drags it with it, it's used to take out units that are in danger of dying out of combat, and to protect weaker units.
The First FE game to have the Capture system. First FE game to have Fog of War, increasing the difficulty even further because you never know what's ahead of you while moving, and can run into enemies at any time.
First FE game to have the Fatigue system. The First FE game to have Gaiden Chapters, which are Extra chapters that are unlocked by meeting specific requirements in the previous chapter, where the player can get a new item or characters, and learn more about the story. The First FE game to have Escape chapters, which are chapters where you have to run away while while fighting unlimited amounts of enemy reinforcements, also your units can be captured in these chapters, and if they were, they can still be rescued in the Gaiden Chapters. First FE game to have Weapon Ranks along with Genealogy of the Holy War , but it is the first game where you are be able to increase the ranks by gaining weapon experience.
Finally, this is a challenging game, if you are used to the current FE style, then don't go into this expecting the same hand holding you get in the current FE games, seriously this game is considered to be one of, if not, the hardest game in all of the FE series.

Majin Tensei - SNES - 09 August 2019:

The first ever spin-off for the SMT series, and the 2nd SMT game ever (after Shin Megami Tensei) to be developed by Atuls.
With a story that follows closely the Manga by the same name, it's actually a Strategy turn-based game, similar to the Devil Survivor series, but with gameplay closer to Fire Emblem.
The story has multiple Endings, and while it might not as heavy on story as others in the series, it makes it for it with gameplay. But either way, if you're a fan of the series, this isn't one you want to miss.

Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Endless Frontier EXCEED - NDS - 13 October 2019:

The SRWOG Saga: Endless Frontier series, is a JRPG spinoff of the famous SRW series made for the DS, by Banpresto and co-developed Monolith Soft (Xenoblade/Xenosaga), but with a completely different combat system and universe.
To put it simply, if you ever played Namco X Capcom or Project x Zone, then you'll immediately be familiar with the concept of this game, to put it simply, it's a crossover game with characters from different games are teleported into the world of the Endless Frontier, a world that is already made out of a combination of multiple worlds connected via Gates. Of course this is a very bare idea of the games world, but it's enough for you to get the idea. Though the amount of game series that are in this crossover world are only 3 (excluding the Endless Frontier), SRW OG, Xenosaga, and Namco X Capcom.
The game's combat system is a mix of traditional turned based combat and a very well done Combo juggling System, probably the best version of this combat system right now, it's tweaked and balanced to maximize the fun value of the system, and just when you thought it couldn't get any better, BAM! comes SRWOG Saga: Endless Frontier Exceed to blow you away, sadly only the first one was offically released in English, but here comes Artema Translations to save the day, enjoy.

Hero Senki: Project Olympus - SNES - 24 December 2019:

Hero Senki is a crossover RPG. It is similar in style to Super Robot Wars but features tokusatsu characters such as Kamen Rider and Ultraman alongside Gundam characters. It is also the first appearance of Gilliam Jaeger, a dimension-hopping traveler who goes on to appear in several Super Robot War titles.

Mega Man Battle Network 4.5: Real Operation - GBA - 28 November 2019:

An outlier in the series, lacking the traditional story and battle system that players had come to expect. The game places you in the role of the operator; instead of controlling just MegaMan, you can choose from over 20 different NetNavis to play. In battle, you don’t control your Navi directly, but they move on their own, and you are restricted to sending them commands and BattleChips. The game featured a Real-Time Clock, and its slimmed-down single player campaign revolved around an Internet that changes in real-time, even while the game is shut off.

Sakura Wars - Sega Saturn - 18 December 2019:

Sakura Wars is a Tactical Mecha JRPG, but this one is more of a dating-sim/JRPG hybrid, while it does have mecha combat, the focus of the game is split between playing through a VN/dating-sim like gameplay where you make choices and decisions that will affect your relationships with the rest of the female cast of your party, while the other half of the game is a really satisfying ass kicking mecha action, and this game doesn't hold back because you can use killing moves galore, the whole combat is really flashy and a treat to watch.
The game also doesn't keep those two halves separate from each other, because both will affect the other, especially how the main character (you) behave during the VN/dating-sim part of the game, every choices you make, of which there will be a lot of, because this game is all about having you make choices and give a reactions to whatever happens to you or infront of you, and this is done by the series famous and classic system called LIPS, or Live & Interactive Picture System, and the choices you make will not only change the relations between you and the rest of the female cast, but will also change the relations they have between each other, and that will reflected on the battlefield.

Translation Projects Released in 2020:

Earth Seeker - Wii - 06 January 2020:

Stranded on a foreign planet is the least of your concerns in Earth Seeker, that place is full of monsters. Stop time in the real time battles to combo them. There are no complicated sequence of inputs, this easy to master system will appeal to players who are unaccustomed to action games or turn based battles.
Besides stopping time, players can recruit allies into their team. The inhabitants of the planet Guardians each master their element. With a bit of alcohol in your possession, you can have them fight for you. Come explore this dangerous and colorful world.(Description taken from the dolphine wiki)

Brave Prove - PS1 - 01 February 2020:

Brave Prove is an action-RPG in a similar vein as the ThoOasis series where you gather Elementals in your quest and save the world. It also features a combo system that is somewhat unique and more reminiscent of a fighting game or beat ‘em up. Give it a try, you might be surprised at how good it is.

Tear Ring Saga Series: Berwick Saga - PS2 - 19 February 2020:

Berwick Saga is a game made under the auspices of Shōzō Kaga, the man who created Fire Emblem. He left Intelligent Systems quite unceremoniously at the turn of the century and went on to found his own development studio, Tirnanog. Tirnanog only developed two games before it was acquired by Enterbrain, and they are collectively called the TearRing Saga Series. Because the games were made by Kaga and are extremely similar to FE, they are usually included among FE fansites as honorary titles. (taken from this post)

Trails from Zero - PC - 15 March 2020:

Time wise, this story happens right after Trails in the Sky, and at the same time as the Erebonian arc from Trails of Cold Steel. For the most part the game uses the same combat system, with some new additions.

Metal Max 3 - NDS - 23 June 2020:

Metal Max 3 is a nonlinear post-apocalyptic role playing game for the Nintendo DS, where you can fight inside vehicles as well as on foot. The game was released in Japan only. Think Fallout but crazier.
Finally as always please drop a thank you to people who worked on these patch, here or on their websites, it takes years of hard work, doing hacking, programming, translating, editing, and testing to bring these patches to the JRPG community, and all of it is done for free, so if you're going to use it, or hell, even if you won't, a thank you wouldn't cost you anything.

2020.06.08 18:23 OfficialKagamineLen Roguelike/dungeon crawler/dating sim

Okay, okay. I think this idea would be cool.
so how the game works is that there is a normal rpg-like overworld, where you can interact with npcs, and date all the ones you can date.
most of the gameplay is similar to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon in a way.
when a date’s affection is high for you, you can invite them to fight alongside you in the dungeons.
in the dungeons, the gameplay is like the dungeons in PMD + the dungeons in Binding of Isaac/Legend of Zelda. You can choose your attacks like in PMD, but it’s more real time than turn based, like Binding of Isaac/Legend of Zelda. More powerful attacks will have cooldowns that last a few seconds, while there will be some weaker rapid-fire ranged attacks. Same rules for melee attacks, though most melee attacks are slower than ranged attacks.
you fight in the progressing dungeons until you reach and defeat the final boss.
there will be two other modes, “harem mode” where you can have as many dates as you want in a dungeon instead of one (for non-monogamists and/or babies who wanna breeze though the game), and ”hardcore mode,” where there is partner permadeath, slightly increased difficulty, and if you die it’s game over (not for babies).
I’m thinking the lore will be about a supernatural being that is about to cause worldwide chaos, and the setting will be medieval fantasy. All your dating options will be monster girls/boys because that would be cool and fit with the fantasy theme (we also need more monster dating sims). There would be a boy and girl version of every monster (with some exceptions, like an Amazon lady).
all dates will be about the same strength and all equally balanced, as to not make players date someone just because they are more powerful. Remember, it is also a dating sim, you wouldn’t date someone just to use them for your own selfish gain, now would you?
the only exception would be a few ”special” dates. These require going to one of two abandoned churches/worship locations, and either not dating anyone and praying daily, or sacrificing your dates/partners to become apostles. The “special” dates will be powerful gods, either an angel or devil, and will be loads more powerful than all other dates/partners. There are different endings, the normal ending where you finish the game with a normal date, and other endings depending on if you finished with a god, and which god you finished with. I’m thinking that maybe there could be a third Lovecraft-like eldritch god alongside the angel and devil.
what do you think?

2020.05.27 04:40 Number224 The 18 Games from Today's Wholesome Games Direct That Will Be Released on Nintendo Switch

EDIT 2 I apologize for not inspecting sources more critically, as there are a few games where at closer inspection have not been announced for Switch but have their eye on the platform. This includes, Errand Boy & Little Witch in the Woods. From the looks of it, the developers are looking into a Switch release, but I mislead into thinking that it was confirmed for a Switch release. With sources checked once more, final number of games that will be on Nintendo Switch is 15 Games
EDIT: It's 17 games coming to Switch. I was mistaken in Snacko being confirmed for Switch. But it's a neat game anyways, so maybe you should check it out.
I don't know how many of you watched today's Wholesome Direct, but there was some great stuff shown off.
Here's a link of the Showcase I am talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwCNzOPR8Ck Unfortunately, one thing that bothered me was the communication of what games will be released on Switch, as most of the titles only advertised a Steam release. So, I went through the 50+ games shown off to see which of these wholesome games also had been announced on Switch. While, some of these games' details are still murky, I counted 18 17 games that are coming soon to Switch or have recently released on the platform.

2020.05.24 20:01 Darkiie Upgrading my PC

I've bought a pre-build computer from a computer shop a few years ago (Around 5 years probably) and I think it's about time to upgrade it as I'm starting to lag more and more into bigger games lately and as this is my first time upgrading a computer, I do need some help figuring parts to get.

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
  Unless anyone think some should be changed.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
12. Do you already have an old PC that you're thinking of upgrading? If so, paste its build here.

2020.05.21 21:36 HarleyKWen Trope Issue #3

I have a bit of a confession to make. I recognize that "Persona 4", "Persona 5", and "Final Fantasy 7: Remake" are well-made games. They have beautiful animations and designs, strong characters, and great writing.
I would never play them, though.
Here's why: I HATE the gameplay. Namely, if my characters are dealing anywhere between 1,000 to 10,000 damage every turn and every boss takes about 20-30 minutes to defeat, what's the point of leveling up at all just for scripted combat?
Useless numbers. Like, in DnD, I see where the numbers come from. In Pokemon and earlier Final Fantasy games, there might be lots of numbers, but you can at least use type advantages and end combat in one or two turns, if your characters are strong enough. Contemporary RPGs, however, just use so many algorithms, it's difficult to know how they decide numbers work without datamining the programming itself.
Ah, but let's be real, what does this have to do with isekai? Big numbers make the monkey/lizard brain feel good for being an accomplishment, right? Bigger numbers mean better results, right?

Well, something I want to talk about before I continue is that these gripes are more about common mistakes or what can make for a lazy isekai. It's not inherently saying everything is bad in isekai or that all isekai make the same mistakes. Some of these issues are even opinion-based. It's fine that people don't agree with me about there being a problem or not.

In this particular case, I'm not really complaining about RPG mechanics themselves, but rather a trend that started with "Sword Art Online", and I'm not just trying to hate on "Sword Art Online" in a meme-y sense. I'm just talking about how ridiculous it is to base characters on numeric stats like isekai of a comedic or deconstruction nature tend to rely on. Forcing stats onto the isekai'd individual gives the sense that they're in an action RPG setting and a sense of progression, but let's say... there's a reason DBZ stopped using Power Levels after the Frieza arc. It's kind of pointless to suggest numbers unless big numbers mean something.
Even then, the numbers themselves are not that big of an issue. It's just the over-reliance on using them to suggest that the character is in a Fantasy Action RPG.

Overall, the issue is something I was discussing in Trope Issue #2. If there are so many game models to base an isekai off of, MMORPG and Fantasy Action RPGs are rather overdone. Like, to the point where Devil Kings and game menus are almost synonymous in the isekai genre and are made into common jokes to be subversive or create a supposed deconstruction of the genre.
Even making the isekai goal of saving the world something as simple as an evil archmage and inventory-based progression rather than stat-based progression (a la Legend of Zelda). Magic MacGuffins might also be done to death, but it would at least add some variety to the genre.

Other ideas:
And I'm sure there are many, many more. The point is just how oddly shallow the isekai genre's reach tends to be at this time.
